For the month of February 2012, Lighthouse Christian Community scheduled a series of messages on Love, Marriage and Family. Here is the introductory message by Dr. Albert Clavo, Senior Pastor.
WHAT IS LOVE?
A famous song says, “Love is a many splendored thing.” And it’s true. Love is experienced by all in various shapes and forms, yet is difficult to define. It can only be described according to one’s experience of it. The Greeks had four words for love, each one depicting an aspect of love.
-
Eros – physical or sensual love; includes romance and passion, usually for an opposite sex.
-
Phileo – brotherly or friendship love; includes affection.
-
Storge – caring love; like that of a parent to his or her child; includes protection and preservation.
-
Agape - unconditional and sacrificial self-giving love. This is the love that considers the other before and beyond considering its own.
The apostle Paul writes in Romans 5:5 that “God has poured his love (agape) into our hearts through the Holy Spirit.” In a family, all four ‘loves’ must be present (with ‘eros’ exclusively for a husband and wife). But it is ‘agape’ that will keep a marriage and family strong through every season of life.
“Beloved, let us love (agape) one another, for love (agape) is from God and everyone who loves (agape) is born of God and knows God.” (1 John 4:7)
